“Mike Tyson has been an open book now for 30 years, but in those mid-80s days, he was never jokey or ironic. Some days he would be in a pissy mood and ignore you, and there could be an air of menace to it,” says Layden. “I wasted more than one trip to Las Vegas, but when he wanted to really sit down and talk, usually about the boxing history he reveres so much, we would have engaging intellectual discussions. … When I was covering him, my wife and I started our family, and Mike would ask after my kids. I’ve been doing this a long time, and that never happens.”
In 1999, Lei took a class taught by David F. Swensen, who was the chief investment officer of the Yale Endowment. Swensen became a mentor to Lei, leading to Lei interning at the Yale Endowment, his first position in finance. During his studies, Lei interned at the Yale University Endowment. Lei translated Swensen’s book, Pioneering Portfolio Management, An Unconventional Approach to Institutional Investment (2000), into Chinese while studying at Yale, which, according to the Financial Times, involved creating new Mandarin words for “endowment” and “fiduciary”. Lei’s investing philosophy is largely based on Swensen’s teachings.
Zhang speaks the Henan variety of Central Plains Mandarin in most of his post-match interviews and on his social media Douyin and Weibo, which has become a signature characteristic of his, as those born before the mid-1980s are the last generation to speak Central Plains Mandarin fluently. It and other languages of China have been gradually replaced by Beijing Mandarin in the younger generation in Henan and provinces all over China.
In a dramatic turn of events, the second press conference between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, held Thursday in Texas, concluded with an unexpected altercation. The previously lighthearted atmosphere witnessed…
9:22pm BST/5:22pm ET: Next up it’s the co-main event. Mikaela Mayer (17-1, 5 KOs) made plenty of friends over in the UK even if she lost her grudge match against Alycia Baumgardner on the undercard of Claressa Shields and Savanah Marshall’s blockbuster showdown at the O2 Arena last October. As such, the American is back on this side of the Atlantic to plot her next bid for world honours following that first career defeat. A bout with Christina Linardatou, the only fighter to defeat Baumgardner, was lined up with all the delicious narrative that entailed. However, Linardatou’s BBB of C medical came back with an anomaly on her eye exam and she was not cleared to fight. Sweden’s Lucy Wildheart (10-1, 4 KOs) is in as a late replacement.
“In the 1980s, boxing was starting to go out of fashion, not like today, but it was waning and Mike showed up and breathed a lot of life into the sport,” says Layden. “There is a quote in the SI story from a boxing analyst of that era basically saying Mike wasn’t a great technician but his power and speed were so incredible, you didn’t want to miss it. Those were fun times.”
“I’m coming back to take back what’s mine,” Joyce said. “September 23 I am leaving everything in that ring. No compromises. No underestimating my opponent. Nothing but a win. “Last time out I lost my undefeated professional record. It was hard to take. But after the dust settled, all that will do is make me better. “I’ve learned lessons. I’m ready. And I am coming for everything.”
9:34pm BST/5:34pm ET: Here comes British-based Swede Wildheart, to the strains of the Game of Thrones theme. More very strong ringwalk work. Mayer on her way now, all business. Nominally the vacant WBC interim lightweight title is on the line. In layman’s terms, box that’s a fast-track to a shot at pound-for-pound superstar Katie Taylor. Let’s go round-by-round…
Round 5: Joyce tries to open up and increase the pace. He needs to and a few shots get through. He is at least out-landing Zhang in this round but still eating monster left hands every so often. Joyce is just never off the line, Zhang could hit him with his eyes closed at this point. Good short left hook from Joyce, Zhang felt that. Talking of eyes being closed, Joyce’ right eye is in very poor shape. By poor shape, I mean it looks like a truck has run over the right-hand side of the Juggernaut’s face.
Zhang’s career goals in professional boxing are clear and ambitious. He aims to become a world champion in his weight class and establish himself as one of the best boxers in the sport. Zhang is dedicated to training hard, improving his skills, and taking on challenging opponents to reach his ultimate goal. With determination and perseverance, Zhang is confident that he can achieve great success in his boxing career.
The match is set for July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The event will be livestreamed exclusively on Netflix via a partnership between the streaming giant and Paul’s Most Valuable Productions, Netflix announced Thursday.
Zhang used that size advantage to bully Wilder and smother him on the ropes. A southpaw, Zhang was able to connect with right hooks that scored time and again as Wilder cocked his vaunted right hand back but rarely let it go.
